DMRC Projects (click a linked folder )

DMRC projects are defined by the challenges of Deep Mining in Canada:

  • Safety

  • Stress and Rockbursts

  • Overstress and Deformation

  • Temperature Extremes

  • Significantly Increasing Capital and Operating Costs

  • Time and Distance to Workings

  • Increased Level of Mechanization. *

In 2004 DMRC decided to proceed with the following four pilot projects:

  • Diesels at Depth

  • Gelfill at Depth

  • Automatic Hoist Rope Inspection

  • Heat Stress

In 2006 DMRC completed and independent deep mining cost model study that was subsequently used to focus strategic topics of:

  • Methods and Logistics

  • Stress

  • Heat.

In 2007 DMRC completed the first round of projects and began developing new projects based upon the cost model strategy.  To date the completed Projects are:

1.  Diesels at Depth (2004-2007)

2.  Gelfill as an Alternative Fill System (2004-2008)

3.  Hoist Rope Inspection Automation (2004-2006)

4.  Dynamic Ground Support : Testing Methods Review (2005)

5.  Dynamic Ground Support: Drop Testing, Various Bolts (2006-2007)

6.  Rapid Development Review (2004)

7.  Deep Mining Cost Model (2006)

8.  Evaluation of Underground Transport Alternatives (2006)

9.  Geothermal Opportunities in Deep Mines (2007)

10.  Drift Excavation using the Rail-Veyor System (2009)

The current on-going projects will be completed in 1-2 years:

1.  Heat Stress

2.  AE Kaiser Effect Brazilian Test

3.  A Functional TSL Mining System

(All projects have the potential for additional phases requiring a term beyond 2010)

The future projects are anticipated in the areas of:
  • Ventilation
  • Access Development
  • Mine Design & Methods
  • De-Stressing
  • Ground Support
  • Resource Management & Automation.

* as defined by the Independent Deep Mining Cost Model Study 2006
